Trees - Symbol of education - literally.

Today I got educated about education while I was on my way to the office. While driving to the office in the morning, I always listen to Radio Mirchi. Like many other people, RJ Dhvanit is my favourite RJ. The reason is simple. He covers so many different topics on varied fields that the listener always stands to gain something - information, positivity & entertainment.

This month, particularly mid July 20 onwards, he has been running his annual campaign called "Tree-Idiots" under which, with the help of the municipal corporation, he arranges to plant thousands of saplings of choice in the backyards of homes of enthusiastic volunteer citizens. So, currently, all his talks, guest interviews are related to trees, plantation, information about the same.

Today i.e. on 23rd July, he was talking to Dr. Bansuri Mahadevia, daughter of famous dentist Dr. Rameshbhai Mahadevia about the family's love for tree.

Now, many people have lots of trees in their garden / courtyard. But, rarely anyone would have a full grown tree right in the middle of their house. However, in case of Mahadevia family, It so happens that they have not one but two grown up trees going up into the sky right from within their home. One tree is of Kadamb (Burflower tree) - the tree under which Shri Krishna's romance with Radha flourished as per mythological legend & another of bael - again a tree which is very dear & close to Lord Shiva as per mythological legend.

During the interview when Dhvanit asked Dr. Bansuri about the logic to expand the residential area of home around the trees without cutting them, she came up with very good & enlightening logic & feelings.

One reason obviously is the trees being dear to Lord Krishna & Lord Shiva. So, by letting the trees grow by remaining inside the home is to prosper with the similar ever lasting affection among family members as between Radha & Krishna & the blessings & protection of Lord Shiva.

The second reason that she came up with struck my chords. She said the trees growing from within / inside the home symbolises education.

Etymologically, education comes from Latin word "educatio" which means breeding, bringing up, rearing / "educo" which means leading forth, taking out, raising up, building / erecting (duco) from / out of (e). So it is basically growing from within. Growing from inside. How wonderful is that.

Looking at education in the light of this definition, it changes the whole perspective about education. It is no longer the curriculum, syllabus, marks & grades. It is about growing from inside, from within. Growing in terms of knowledge, skills, personality, outlook, maturity & last but not the least - humanity. Hence, apart from any course/ syllabus/curriculum that helps you acquire knowledge & skills, any experience, experiment, discussion, hobby that helps one to grow from within is education.  Growth in the stock of information / skill is education.  Growth in one's goodness by helping others is education.  Growth in one's maturity is education - cause all these growths are from within.

There is another word there in the etymology. It is breeding. By itself, it is related to act results in creation of something.  So, anything that helps one conduct an act resulting into some creation is education. The creation however, should happen as a result of breeding of knowledge /  skills one acquires with one's soul / personality & the creation that comes into being should be constructive, furthering growth. This breeding is then education.

It also refers to leading forth. A person who grows from inside by breeding of knowledge & his soul/personality, generally happens to lead - knowingly / unknowingly as he has more matured all inclusive thinking on a subject matter.

It also refers to building. It is about building goodwill & legacy which helps others proceed in similar fashion and get educated.

The trees do good to the whole world by helping conserve the environment. Gautam Buddha got enlightenment sitting under the tree of Bodhisattva. Maharishi Devendranath Tagore also got enlightenment under the tree of Saptaparni - Ditabark.  They grow in most difficult conditions also. Even after they are trimmed, they grow. The trees support so much of other kind of plant & animal environments. Thus, Trees also lead forth by showing the way of living life. They entirely fit into the etymological definition of education. They in fact,  symbolise education & growth from within.

So, grow like trees. Get educated.
